Democratic retirement gives GOP prime House pickup opportunity

Updated 4:12 p.m., 12/17/13

(CNN) - In an apparent major setback for House Democrats, longtime Rep. Jim Matheson of Utah announced Tuesday he will not seek re-election next year.

"I take the role of representative seriously and intend to conclude this chapter of my service to our state in the same way I have always approached my job," Matheson wrote in a posting on his Facebook page.

CNN 100: A national or local election in Utah's 2nd?

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption =" The CNN 100 takes a look at the top 100 House races, from now until Election Day."]Editor's Note: In the final 100 days before Election Day, CNN has been profiling one race at random each day from among the nation's top 100 House races, which we've dubbed "The CNN 100." Read the full list here. Today's featured district is:

Utah 2nd – Rep. Jim Matheson is seeking a 6th term
Primary: June 22, 2010
Location: parts of Salt Lake City, Eastern and Southern Utah
Days until Election Day: 65

Since 2002, Rep. Jim Matheson has won Utah's 2nd District with expanding majorities - an impressive feat for a Democrat in a conservative state. Though his party remains unpopular at home, Matheson will bank on his personal popularity and votes against major Democratic initiatives to retain his seat. Republicans hoping to add this seat to their column face a tough fight.
