Did the NSA overreach? Lawmakers spar over data-collection program

(CNN) – Members of Congress are split on whether to rein in the National Security Agency's surveillance activities after intelligence leaks revealed the extent of the government's data-collection program.

A review of NSA surveillance practices ordered by the White House recommended changes to the program including greater judicial oversight and more public transparency in the collection of metadata. And a U.S. district judge said that the mass collection of phone records was probably unconstitutional.

Manchin continues push for one-year delay to Obamacare

(CNN) - West Virginia Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin called Sunday for a delay to the individual mandate portion of the Affordable Care Act, warning that the law could fall apart and fail to deliver the care promised.

Bipartisan group of senators helped pave the way for a Senate deal

Washington (CNN) - Congressional approval ratings hovered at historic lows. Republican and Democrats hurled insults at each other and among themselves. The political circus in Washington even made its way to "Saturday Night Live: - in a sketch featuring Miley Cyrus, at that.

It seemed that nothing would break through the partisan stronghold that left Capitol Hill at a standstill in the weeks leading up to and during the partial government shutdown.

Manchin: Senate is 70%-80% close to a deal

Updated 10:32 a.m. ET, 10/14/2013

(CNN) – The Senate is 70% to 80% close to a deal to raise the debt ceiling and end the government shutdown, Sen. Joe Manchin, D-West Virginia, said Monday on CNN's "New Day."

"I think we're 70%-80% there, putting the extra 20-25% to it," he told CNN's Chris Cuomo. "When should the (continuing resolution) come due, when should the debt ceiling come due, and does that give that time for the budget conference, the budget committees to sit down and work through this? Those are the details that have to be worked out."

WH: You can't delay the individual mandate

Washington (CNN) – White House Press Secretary Jay Carney was dismissive Thursday of comments by Sen. Joe Manchin endorsing a one-year delay of the new health care law's individual mandate.

"The fact is you have to make the system work," Carney told reporters during the White House press briefing, arguing that one of the most popular aspects of the Affordable Care Act, the protection of those with preexisting conditions, cannot work without the individual mandate.

Bloomberg to host fundraiser for Manchin

Washington (CNN) - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is hosting a fundraiser at his home for Sen. Joe Manchin, D-West Virginia, later this month, a source familiar with the event confirms to CNN.

Bloomberg, because of his wealth, has become one of the most prominent backers of gun control. He has praised Manchin for his leadership since he co-sponsored a measure, ultimately defeated by the Senate in April, to expand background checks for purchases at gun shows and over the internet.
