(CNN) - Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley of Maryland will unleash a blistering critique of his Republican counterpart in South Carolina, Nikki Haley, in remarks to a Democratic party conference in Charleston on Saturday.
O'Malley plans to attack Haley, who is up for re-election next year, as "tea party Republican" who cares more about voter ID laws than expanding health care access and education for South Carolinians, according to early excerpts of his speech provided to CNN.
(CNN) - The Maryland General Assembly voted Friday to ban the death penalty. The vote was 82 for and 56 against.
The bill now goes to Gov. Martin O'Malley's desk.

(CNN) - Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley plans to announce Monday morning that he'll push for new tough measures to reduce gun violence.
"Later this week we'll be introducing a comprehensive legislative package to prevent gun violence – that addresses guns themselves, but also entails a mental-health and school safety approach," the two-term Democratic governor will say during a speech at a gun control summit being held at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, according to a senior O'Malley adviser.

(CNN) - Democratic governors on Tuesday selected new leadership for the Democratic Governors Association. Gov. Peter Shumlin of Vermont will succeed Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley as chairman of the organization, while O'Malley becomes the group's finance chairman, the DGA announced.
Those selections and others were expected by Democratic insiders. The DGA works to recruit and support Democratic candidates for governor and assists Democratic incumbents running for re-election.

(CNN) – A day after prominent Democrats struggled to answer whether or not Americans were better off in 2012 than they were four years ago, party leaders on Monday explained why the question didn't have an easy answer, and renewed their attempt to pin the blame for Americans' economic woes on the previous president.
Brad Woodhouse, communications director for the Democratic National Committee, said on CNN's "Early Start" that Americans were "absolutely" better off than four years ago, portraying the president as a pilot who brought a crashing airplane out of a downward trajectory.
