IRS says it's unable to recover subpoenaed Lerner e-mails in computer crash

(CNN) – Republican lawmakers are slamming the Internal Revenue Service, with one calling for an immediate investigation, after the agency notified Congress Friday that it was unable to recover former official Lois Lerner’s e-mails from January 2009 to April 2011 because of a computer crash.

The agency made the disclosure in a letter sent to Congressional investigators Friday afternoon, according a statement from Rep. Charles Boustany Jr., R-Louisiana.

The Obamacare echo chamber: Neither side will budge

WASHINGTON (CNN) - As a potential government shutdown inched closer Saturday morning, the Obama administration reiterated that it will not negotiate with Republicans over delaying the president's signature health care law.

A day after President Barack Obama said any attempt to "gut" or repeal the Affordable Care Act "will not happen under the threat of a shutdown," a White House official echoed the commander-in-chief, telling CNN's Jim Acosta a continuing resolution that alters or delays Obamacare will not merit the president's signature.

Hatch, Obama clash on fiscal cliff in weekly addresses

(CNN) - Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah on Saturday railed against White House proposals put forward earlier this week in the ongoing fiscal cliff debate.

"The president has said he wants a so-called balanced approach to solve this crisis," Hatch said in the GOP weekly address. "But what he proposed this week was a classic bait-and-switch on the American people."

Underdog Dan Liljenquist, 37, a former state senator, waged a spirited attempt to unseat the longtime senator, hoping to emulate the tea party-fueled ouster of incumbent Sen. Bob Bennett in 2010.

Hatch to appear at Utah debate (kind of)

(CNN) - Sen. Orrin Hatch may look a little stiff at a debate Thursday–given he'll appear as a cardboard cutout.

In response to the senator's refusal to take part in an on-stage debate, his Republican challenger Dan Liljenquist will hold a debate of his own, standing side-by-side a life-size image of the senator.
