(CNN) – Former Rep. Pete Hoekstra’s closest competitor in Michigan’s GOP Senate primary conceded Tuesday evening, and called on his supporters to unite behind Hoekstra, a former nine-term congressman.
Hoekstra was up against attorney Clark Durant in the GOP race. On Tuesday, Durant told his followers they must “unite behind candidates who will focus on the solutions to our record debt and spending crisis which effects every man, woman and child in Michigan.”

Washington (CNN) – Republican Pete Hoekstra is taking a pass at the opportunity to challenge Michigan Sen. Debbie Stabenow, the former 9-term congressman announced Friday.
"After serious consideration and many discussions with friends and supporters, Diane and I have made the decision that I will not be a candidate for the United States Senate in 2012," Hoekstra wrote in an e-mail to supporters. "This was an extremely difficult decision for us to make as we saw strong points both for and against running. However, in our final analysis, we agreed that it was not in the best interest of our family at this time to enter the race."

Pete Hoekstra, who is running for governor of his state."](CNN) - Less than a week after backing Florida Senate candidate Marco Rubio's bid for office, former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney announced another endorsement Thursday.
The former Massachusetts governor is backing nine-term Michigan Rep. Pete Hoekstra in his bid for Michigan's governorship.
"For too long, Michigan has suffered with high unemployment and job loss," Romney said in a statement released by his Free and Strong America PAC. "It is critical that we elect pro-growth conservative leaders who will keep taxes low, cut wasteful spending and create jobs. Pete Hoekstra has the capability and the right policies to get Michigan's economy moving again."
Romney's PAC also announced that he would attend a fundraiser for Hoekstra in Grand Rapids, Michigan on April 28.

Peter Hoekstra posted a message on Twitter accusing the administration of 'stonewalling.'"]Washington (CNN) - When President Obama spoke out on the terrorism scare in Detroit, Michigan, he entered a debate that had already begun over his administration's new approach to combating terrorism.
"As a nation we will do everything in our power to protect our country," Obama said while vacationing in Hawaii. "We will continue to use every element of our national power to disrupt, to dismantle and defeat the violent extremists who threaten us, whether they are from Afghanistan or Pakistan, Yemen or Somalia, or anywhere where they are plotting attacks against the U.S. homeland."
Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab is being held for allegedly trying to blow up a flight carrying 300 passengers on Christmas Day. Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula claimed responsibility Monday for the attack, saying it was in retaliation for U.S. strikes on Yemeni soil.
On Sunday, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano initially gave something of a thumbs up to the government's handling of the Detroit terror scare.
"One thing I want to point out is that the system worked. Everybody played an important role here. The passengers and crew of the flight took appropriate action," Napolitano said on CNN's State of the Union.
Within minutes, Republicans went on the attack.
"Earlier today Secretary Napolitano said the system worked. in fact the system did not work," Rep. Peter King, R-New York, said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Former professional football player Jay Riemersma announced Monday that he is running for Congress in Michigan in 2010.
The GOP candidate is running for the seat being vacated by Rep. Peter Hoekstra, a Republican vying to become the next governor of Michigan. Riemersma set up an exploratory committee in June, but made it official on Monday with a speech in Holland, Michigan.
Riemersma played for the Buffalo Bills from 1996–2002 and the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2003–2004.
Comparing Congress to the National Football League, the former Buffalo Bills tight end promised to "never vote to raise your taxes."
"I'm announcing my candidacy today because we need a Republican renaissance – a return to our conservative principles of governance – and I'm ready to help lead this movement," Riemersma said, in remarks released by his campaign.
Since retiring from professional sports, Riemersma has been working for the conservative Family Research Council and coaching high school football. In November 2008, he penned a letter to the editor in the Holland Sentinal entitled "How could Christians vote for Obama?"
