Thompson wins GOP Senate primary in Wisconsin
(CNN) - Former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson won Tuesday's Republican primary for a U.S. Senate seat in the state.
Thompson's main opponents–businessman Eric Hovde and former Rep. Mark Neumann–conceded after the results came in.

Arizona primary: McCain avoids questions, Hayworth throws final punches
Phoenix (CNN) - On primary day in Arizona, Republican Senator John McCain seemed a man of few words considering his front runner status. Joined by his wife, Cindy, who was wearing a leopard print suit, McCain voted at Phoenix's Madison Camelview Elementary School shortly after 9 a.m. MST. He chatted briefly with school kids and their parents then gave 21 seconds of remarks to the gathered press before refusing to take questions.
The candidate, seeking a 5th term as a U.S. Senator from Arizona, told gathered media: "We're looking forward to a good turnout today and there's already been a lot of early voting. We're confident we're going to win but obviously it isn't over till it's over."
McCain joked about the weather, and promised to "take nothing for granted." As he started to walk away, CNN asked him to respond to his opponent's charge that he'll move to the left if re-elected. The candidate smiled and kept on walking.
Big bucks, ugly battles dominate Tuesday primaries

Hayworth."](CNN) - As voters in five states go to the polls on Tuesday, big-dollar challenges to veteran politicians dominate the top races.
The big storylines: Two billionaire political newcomers spent millions of their own money to try to pull upsets in Florida, Arizona Sen. John McCain is expected to fend off the biggest Republican primary challenge of his Senate career and a little-known Tea Party candidate is taking on an incumbent senator in Alaska.
Voters will also pick the Democratic gubernatorial nominee in a wide-open Vermont race, and decide the runoff winners in two Oklahoma Republican primaries.
Races in Washington state, Wyoming top Tuesday's primaries

In Washington, Democratic Sen. Patty Murray and Republican candidate Dino Rossi are expected to emerge from a crowded primary field, setting up a November showdown. Under the state's system, the two candidates who receive the most votes regardless of party affiliation move on to the general election. Voting has been underway for two weeks, with Washington primarily a mail-in ballot state.
In many ways, Murray and Rossi have already begun their general election campaigns, focusing their attacks on each other. Polls show a close race in the fall if they both advance.
Primaries put incumbents on the line

The races come in the wake of some tough blows to sitting lawmakers: Sen. Bob Bennett, a three-term senator, failed to advance at the Utah GOP convention, and Rep. Alan Mollohan didn't win over fellow Democrats in last week's West Virginia primary.
Leaders of both parties agree - it's a tough year for experienced politicians.
"There is no question. There is, at this moment, an anti-incumbent mood," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California. And House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, warned, "It's 'politicians beware.' "
