START gets initial approval in Russia

Moscow (CNN) - The lower house of the Russian parliament gave preliminary approval Friday to START, a nuclear arms reduction treaty between Russia and the United States.

The State Duma voted 350-58 in favor of the accord Friday. It needed 225 votes to pass.

Senate votes to approve START treaty

(CNN) - The Senate voted Wednesday to approve the new nuclear arms control treaty with Russia - a major foreign policy victory for the Obama administration near the end of the lame-duck session of Congress.

The New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, or New START, was cleared with the help of solid Democratic support, as well as the backing of several Republican senators.

Nuclear arms treaty clears key Senate hurdle

Washington (CNN) - The new nuclear arms control pact with Russia cleared a key procedural hurdle Tuesday as the Senate voted to cut off debate on the measure.

The 67-28 vote indicated a near-certain win for President Barack Obama on one of his top foreign policy priorities as Democrats continued to push through a series of measures before the end of the lame-duck session of Congress.

START likely to be approved

(CNN) - At least nine Senate Republicans plan to vote for the START treaty, giving it enough support for Senate approval, according to a CNN estimate.

Senators prepared to cast a key procedural vote Tuesday on the new arms control treaty with Russia as backers and opponents of the accord made their final arguments.

CNN Poll: Majority say Russia will live up to START obligations

WASHINGTON (CNN) - As the Senate nears a crucial vote over a new nuclear arms treaty with Russia, according to a new national poll nearly three-quarters of all Americans say senators should approve the accord.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Tuesday also indicates that a majority says that Moscow would live up to its obligations if the START treaty is approved.

McConnell leads GOP counter-attack against START pact

Washington (CNN) - Senate Republicans mounted a counter-attack Sunday against ratifying a new nuclear arms treaty with Russia this year, trying to put off a vote that Democrats say they will win if it is held.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky led the way, telling CNN's "State of the Union" that members of his party need more time to consider the START accord.

McConnell says he 'cannot support' nuclear arms treaty

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky voiced opposition Sunday to the New START - a nuclear arms treaty with Russia - saying that members of his party need more time to consider the legislation.

"I've decided I cannot support the treaty," McConnell said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” "I think if they'd taken more time with this, rushing it right before Christmas strikes me as trying to jam us."

BREAKING: McCain START amendment fails

(CNN) - Members of the U.S. Senate voted down an amendment Saturday that would have taken out language that recognizes a relationship between offensive and defensive weapons from the preamble of the new START treaty, the proposed nuclear arms treaty with Russia. The vote was 59-37 against the amendment, which was put forward by Arizona Sen. John McCain.

Washington (CNN) - The proposed nuclear arms treaty with Russia, the New START, is now a political football of sorts, entering into the 2012 lexicon.

While the bill remains a point of contention between Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill where the Senate has yet to vote on the measure, some potential 2012 GOP presidential candidates are staking out their positions.

Senate Dems confident over START

Washington (CNN) - On Friday, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry said the Senate is prepared to vote on a nuclear arms treaty with Russia.

"We are certainly prepared to move for a vote," he said on the Senate floor. "I want to emphasize that there are no amendments from colleagues on the Democratic side. We are prepared to vote on this treaty ... We will take any amendment at any time."
