Tested in Vietnam, Shinseki finds himself in firestorm over veterans' care

(CNN) - Those who know Eric Shinseki chuckled when their laconic friend began his Army retirement speech in 2003 with this: "'My name is Shinseki, and I am a soldier."

Dem 2014 candidates want VA chief out

Updated 6:18 p.m. ET, 5/23/2014

(CNN) - Democrats in a three high-profile 2014 races are calling for embattled Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki to resign over a scandal that has rocked his agency and again placed the spotlight of scrutiny on the Obama administration.

Alison Lundergan Grimes, running for Senate in Kentucky, and Charlie Crist, seeking to regain his old job as Florida governor, are going beyond sentiment expressed publicly by Democrats in Washington, who are overall sticking with Shinseki so far.

They were joined on Friday by Michelle Nunn, the Democratic nominee for Senate in Georgia.

Aiken: 'Buck has to stop' with Obama on VA

(CNN) - American Idol star turned congressional nominee Clay Aiken called the Department of Veterans Affairs "unwieldy," and said President Barack Obama is ultimately responsible for holding the VA accountable.

Asked by CNN's Brooke Baldwin on Wednesday whether the President should take a more hands-on approach to dealing the growing controversy, Aiken said, "I certainly think the President is responsible for it at the end of the day."

(CNN) - The chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee is calling on the Obama administration to permit veterans waiting for care at VA hospitals to seek treatment outside that system, if they want.

With VA, Obama management style under fire again

Washington (CNN) - The White House is once again brushing aside questions about President Barack Obama's management style.

Amid the growing scandal over the apparent cover-up of patient wait times at some Veterans Affairs facilities, Republicans and even some Democrats have complained Obama's public posture has been detached, relying too heavily on VA Secretary Eric Shinseki.

House committee chair calls VA response 'unacceptable'

Washington (CNN) - House Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Jeff Miller says the response by the Department of Veterans Affairs to a subpoena from his committee over allegations of deadly health care delays has been "very weak" and "unacceptable."

The Florida Republican told CNN that if the embattled agency doesn't provide more details about the information sought earlier this month, the committee could move to hold the VA in contempt.

Support for Shinseki holding for now among Senate Democrats

(CNN) - Despite mounting calls from congressional Republicans for Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki to resign following the escalating scandal at his department, support among Senate Democrats appears to be holding for now, according to several senior Senate Democratic aides.

The aides, who asked not to be identified discussing how Democrats are generally responding to the issue, agreed the embattled Cabinet official needs to take bold steps to show he is dealing with the problem.

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama first learned through news reports on CNN about accusations that officials at a Veterans Affairs medical facility in Phoenix had allegedly used fraudulent lists to conceal wait times for veterans receiving care, a top White House spokesman said Monday.

"If you mean the specific allegations that I think were first reported by your network out of Phoenix I believe, we learned about them through the reports," White House press secretary Jay Carney said in reference to CNN's story on April 23.

Tepid support for VA secretary amid patient care scandal

Washington (CNN) - A key whistleblower in the intensifying scandal over wait times at veterans hospitals took issue on Sunday with an initial internal review that downplayed the number of people who may have died while waiting for care.

The comments came as the embattled Veterans Affairs secretary received tepid support from some critics of the department's handling of a chronic problem across many of the VA's care facilities.
