Matt Romney backs off birth certificate quip

(CNN) – Mitt Romney's second-oldest son, Matt, made his first foray into the Twitterverse Friday with a mea culpa for tying the release of his father's tax returns to President Barack Obama's birth certificate.

Thursday Matt Romney responded to a question at a Concord, New Hampshire event about whether his father would release federal tax returns.

'Liberated' Gary Johnson seeks Libertarian nomination

(CNN) – Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson announced his intention to seek the Libertarian nomination for president Wednesday.

Calling his choice "both a difficult decision-and an easy one," in a statement, Johnson decried the Republican presidential nomination process and pledged to bring a "libertarian voice" to the 2012 race.

'Johnny' Huntsman 'B.Goode'

(CNN) – Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman was the latest 2012 candidate to make the late night rounds Wednesday with an appearance on "The Late Show with David Letterman."

Huntsman, who's polled at the bottom of the 2012 pack thus far, talked up his days in China as the U.S. ambassador under President Obama and showed off his musical talents while jamming with the house band.

Paul re-releases ad in Iowa and New Hampshire

(CNN) – Texas Rep. Ron Paul will again tout his pro-life credentials in an ad going up on airwaves in Iowa and New Hampshire Wednesday. The spot is a re-cut of another ad previously released in the early presidential nominating states, with new material added.

The ad features former patients of Paul, an obstetrician who trumpets delivering over 4,000 babies during his time as a practicing physician.

Romney: Super PACs are a 'disaster'

(CNN) – Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney had a few complaints Tuesday about his GOP rival for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination and the super PAC spending that has garnered increased attention during this election cycle.

Romney called super political action committees a "disaster" and said they should be abolished. Super PACs can receive unlimited, undisclosed contributions as long as they do not coordinate with official campaigns.

(CNN) - Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich won a straw poll hosted by the Tea Party Patriots Sunday.

The Tea Party Patriots announced the results Monday following a conference call held late Sunday when more than 23,000 supporters across the country voted on their selection for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination.

Des Moines Register editor: Romney is 'refreshing'

(CNN) – Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney nabbed the backing of the Des Moines Register, a decision the editor of the largest Iowa paper attributed Monday to "maturity" and experience.

"Gov. Romney focused on the most important issues," Rick Green told CNN's "American Morning" anchor Ali Velshi. And although the board did not select Romney when he ran four years ago, this cycle, he stood out for his "focus."

Huntsman: Everyone gets 15 minutes of fame

(CNN) – Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman isn’t worried that he hasn’t topped national polls measuring support of candidates seeking the 2012 Republican nomination for president.

“Everyone gets their Warholian 15 minutes of fame. They go up and they go down,” Huntsman told CNN Political Correspondent Joe Johns. “I’m getting whiplash watching all of my friends go up and down. I don’t want that to happen to me.”
