Crist to back Bill Nelson in Florida Senate race

(CNN) - Former Gov. Charlie Crist will endorse Sen. Bill Nelson in his bid for re-election at a campaign event Friday, CNN has confirmed.

Crist is expected to back Nelson at a Florida fundraiser hosted by his law firm where former President Bill Clinton will appear.

McCotter strikes 'another match,' resigns from office

Washington (CNN) - Michigan Rep. Thaddeus McCotter ended his fifth term in Congress Friday, four months before the November congressional election.

The unsuccessful GOP 2012 presidential candidate resigned from his congressional post after failing to gain a spot on the primary ballot for re-election to the 11th District, set in August.

Democrats continue to accuse GOP of a 'war on women'

Washington (CNN) – House Democrats pummeled Republicans Tuesday, accusing them of playing politics with domestic abuse legislation.

"We want every member of the House Judiciary Committee to realize that this attack on women is going to be noted across the United States of America," said Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, the top Democrat on the committee, during a Capitol Hill press conference.

Snowe backs Brown in Massachusetts Senate battle

(CNN) – Outgoing Sen. Olympia Snowe gave her endorsement to another centrist Republican senator Thursday–one who's fighting to keep his seat.

Snowe endorsed Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown in his effort to hold onto the seat he wrested from Democrats in a 2010 special election.

Lugar beats back residency challenge

(CNN) - Sen. Dick Lugar, the third most senior member of the Senate, triumphed Friday over challenges to his eligibility to pursue re-election as a candidate from Indiana because he no longer has a home there.

Lugar, who has lived in McLean, Virginia, since the sale of his Indianapolis home in 1977, had insisted that residency was not an issue for him since the Indiana state constitution stipulates he only had to be a resident to run for Senate during his first campaign.

Rep. Cleaver aids ailing woman

(CNN) – Congressional Black Caucus chair Emanuel Cleaver came to the aid of an unidentified woman Friday, while traveling from a meeting in his district, according to Michele Rooney, spokesman to the congressman.

The Democratic Missouri congressman was riding in the passenger side of a car when he noticed a hand waving above the weeds in a ditch off the side of the road. Cleaver alerted his staff member to stop and they both jumped out of the vehicle to discover a woman in distress who was going in and out of consciousness

Pelosi: 'Instinct' says Gingrich won't be president

Washington (CNN) - Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi Thursday dismissed the idea she knows something secret about former House Speaker Newt Gingrich that would disqualify him from being president, saying it's just her "instinct" - based on the public record.

Pelosi ruled out Gingrich's chances of becoming the GOP nominee Tuesday when she told CNN Chief National Correspondent John King, "He's not going to be President of the United States. That's not going to happen."

GOP Rep. Wally Herger to retire

(CNN) – Republican Congressman Wally Herger of California announced Tuesday that he will retire from the House of Representatives at the end of his 13th term.

"I have been blessed with the privilege of serving my community, district, state and country for 35 years and being part of some of the most important events in our nation's history," Herger said, according to a released statement.
