GOP congressman to announce retirement

Washington (CNN) - Add Rep. Tom Petri to the growing list of House members who are retiring at the end of the year rather than running for re-election.

The Wisconsin Republican's office put out a statement Friday that the 17-term congressman will make a statement on Monday at a town hall in Neenah, Wisconsin, "announcing that he will not be a candidate for reelection to Congress."

Obamacare combatants fight for attention

Washington (CNN) - It's been pushed off the radar the past couple of weeks by the 24/7 media coverage over whether Congress should authorize a military strike against Syria, but the bitter partisan battle over the new national health care law claws its way back into the spotlight on Tuesday.

Proponents of the drive to defund the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare, take to the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol to hold an afternoon rally. A couple of hours earlier supporters of the law held their own gathering on Capitol Hill to push back against what they call Republican attempts to "sabotage" the health care law.

Boehner throws polling punch on president

Washington (CNN) - House Speaker John Boehner is tweaking President Barack Obama over the president's poll numbers.

Asked by reporters Wednesday about Obama's strategy of holding events across the country to push policies and proposals on the economy, Boehner at first declined to comment.

Back to the future for Mark Sanford

Washington (CNN) - Mark Sanford is a member of Congress, again.

The former Republican governor of South Carolina, whose political career was left for dead along the Appalachian Trail after an extramarital affair, was sworn in Wednesday to the House of Representatives.
