Hawaii governor taps Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz as new U.S. senator

(CNN) – Hawaii’s governor announced Wednesday that Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz will fill the seat in the U.S. Senate left vacant after the death of Sen. Daniel Inouye.

Schatz, 40, is a former state legislator and executive of a nonprofit group.

King says he's an independent, not a 'stunt'

(CNN) - Angus King, the Maine independent who has won election to the U.S. Senate, said on CNN Wednesday he represents a serious attempt to bring bi-partisanship to Washington.

"I ran on the platform of trying to call them as I see them, not be locked into a party position one way or the other," he said on CNN's "Newsroom." "But on the other hand, it isn't a stunt - I'm not going down there just to plant the flag and not get anything done."

Romney, Ryan field Medicare question in first joint interview

(CNN) - In their first joint interview as the 2012 Republican ticket, Mitt Romney and Rep. Paul Ryan on Sunday addressed questions about Ryan's Medicare proposal, which at least one critic says would "end Medicare as we know it" and others have speculated could present Romney electoral challenges in senior citizen-rich Florida.

Ryan, however, has said major changes are necessary to rein in levels of federal spending on the program which premium payments and payroll taxes cannot cover. He used a personal example to make the point in his Sunday interview.

Portman leaves door open for VP spot

(CNN) - Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio on Thursday pushed back – ever so slightly - at the suggestion he might join Mitt Romney's presidential ticket, offering nothing of the definitive "no" which some other possible vice presidential candidates have voiced.

Asked on CNN's "John King, USA" if he liked the sound of a Mitt Romney-Rob Portman ticket, Portman demurred.
