(CNN) - First lady Michelle Obama brought holiday cheer to young patients at Children's National Medical Center in Washington on Monday - a tradition that dates back 60 years with first lady Bess Truman.
"This is one of my favorite traditions ... coming to see you guys at the hospital," she told a group of children, staff members and families that had gathered to see her.
After a tour through the medical care unit, Obama sat down to read "A Visit From St. Nicholas" ('Twas the night before Christmas ...) to the group.

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama made a surprise appearance at Tuesday's kids' "State Dinner" at the White House - an event thrown by the the first lady to welcome the winners of the second annual "Healthy Lunchtime Challenge."
"Usually at a state dinner I get invited, so I don't know what happened on this one," the president joked. "I hear the food is pretty good."

Washington (CNN) - The Justice Department's sweeping collection of Associated Press phone records as part of a national security leak investigation has had a chilling effect on sources, the news agency's top executive said on Wednesday.
"Some of our long-trusted sources have become nervous and anxious about talking to us - even on stories that aren't about national security," AP Chief Executive and President Gary Pruitt said at the National Press Club.

Washington (CNN) – Setting up another potential showdown with the White House, House Republicans plan a vote Friday on a bill focused on consolidating job training programs despite opposition from the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue.
The House is scheduled to take up the new bill, the Supporting Knowledge and Investing in Lifelong Skills, or SKILLS act, Thursday.

Washington (CNN) - In an effort to create more jobs and improve transportation, the Obama administration announced a new "Use It or Lose It" program Friday, making nearly $500 million in unspent earmarks available for states to use on so-called "shovel ready" infrastructure projects.
From 2003 to 2006, Congress set aside $473 million in earmark transportation funds that have never been spent.
