Arizona 08: Rep. Gabrielle Giffords defends her seat
Primary: August 24, 2010
Location: Tucson
Days until the election: 33
Rising Democratic star Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is defending her seat from in this Tucscon-based congressional district. Though voters in Arizona's eighth supported McCain in 2008, and George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004, Giffords' prowess as a candidate and deep roots in her district will likely be big factors if she is able to hold on to her seat. Both parties and political handicappers aren't letting this race out of their sights because the GOP candidate, Iraq vet Jesse Kelly, has a shot to wrest the seat from Giffords. It won't be easy, however.

Massachusetts 10th: Rep. Bill Delahunt is retiring.
Primary: September 14, 2010
Location: South shore and Cape Cod.
Days until the election: 37
There's very little about the race for Massachusetts 10th congressional seat that someone paying just the slightest bit of attention to the upcoming midterm elections wouldn't be able to predict: it's an open seat, with longtime Democratic Rep. Bill Delahunt retiring; there's a Republican candidate vying for a pick up with a broad, anti-incumbent, anti-Democrat, anti-illegal immigration, anti-Pelosi message (and though this district is probably GOP's best shot in the state for a house pick-up, this is still Massachusetts); and there's a Democrat who is walking the line between appealing to his base and making sure everyone understands that he's "not beholden to anyone" (read: he knows his party isn't winning any popularity contests this cycle.).

CORRECTION: In Thursday's original post, Rep. Scott Murphy was mistakenly identified as Rep. Scott Brown. We have corrected the error throughout the story.
New York 20: Rep. Scott Murphy defends his seat.Primary: September 14, 2010
Location: Hudson valley including Albany
Days until the election: 40
This is Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's old seat, which remained in Democratic hands when Rep. Scott Murphy won the special election held last year. The GOP has mounted a pretty strong effort to win this district over to their column, with a ticket that unified even before the state's primary, when Republican candidate Pat Ziegler dropped out of the race and endorsed retired Army Colonel and Iraq vet Chris Gibson. Still, heading into the final stretch of the general election, prominent political handicappers Stuart Rothenberg and Charlie Cook agree that this seat will likely stay blue.
